CO2-lab is both an experimental laboratory and a mind lab.
On a practical level, our research on post combustion capture of CO2 involves the following:
- Modelling of CO2 capture processes
- Control of CO2 capture processes
- Improveded understanding of the amine technology
- Environmental improvement of CO2 capture processes
- Improved knowledge about environmental consequences of amine use
- Further development of our software tools applied to CO2 capture processes
- CO2 capture experiments
- Contributing to establishing pilot scale facilities, with a particular focus on CO2 capture from an environmental point of view
- Establishment and development of networks via national and international cooperation
Main focus areas in our post-combustion CO2 capture research:
- Minimization of energy consumption
- Minimization of capital expenditure
- Minimization of amine degradation
- Handling of amine waste
- Minimization of amine degradation and amine waste generation, including the impact of waste gas composition
- Different ways of handling amine waste
- Possible environmental impacts of pre-combustion and oxy-combustion
- Laboratory experiments will be part of the study
Modelling, control and monitoring of CO2 capture:
- Detailed studies of the flow within process equipment units
- Flow modelling of gas distribution in the absorption and stripper columns, focusing on uniform load
- Dynamic process simulation of the post combustion capture process
- Analysis and characterization of regenerated absorbent
- Analysis and characterization of emissions to the atmosphere (CO2 fraction, amine concentration etc)
- Emissions monitoring systems
- Emissions control systems
- Integrated design of the process and the control system, in order to make the system as self-controlling as possible
- Optimum operation of the heat-integrated process
- Utilization and improvement of modern simulation tools applied to existing and new CO2 capture processes and process equipment.
- Use of Aspen Hysys (commercial process simulation tool) and Fluent (commercial CFD software) as simulation tools.
- Use of Matlab to develop our own models.
Monitoring of other CO2 capture technology:
- Pre-combustion
- Oxy-fuel combustion
- Chemical looping
- Transport of CO2
- The CO2 value chain in general
