The research on CO2 involves both theoretical work, modelling/simulation and experiments in the laboratory. Some of the laboratory equipment used is shown below.

Equilibrium cell (TUC/Tel-Tek setup); used to measure CO2 absorption equilibria in MEA solutions

Gas chromatograph (Thermo Scientific Trace GC Ultra); used to measure CO2 in the exhaust gas from the equilibrium cell

Rheometer (Anton Paar MCR-101); used to measure the viscosity of MEA solutions and other liquids

Density meters (Anton Paar DMA 4500 and Anton Paar DMA HP); used to measure the density of MEA solutions and other liquids, at moderate to high pressures

Goniometer (Ramé-Hart Instrument); used to measure surface tension of MEA solutions and other liquids

Gas solubility cell (TUC/Tel-Tek setup); used to determine the physical solubility of CO2 in MEA solutions

Laminar jet absorber; used to measure absorption rate of gas (CO2) into liquids (amine solutions)

Autoclave (Büchi Ecoclave); used to investigate amine degradation products

GC/MS (Agilent Technologies); the combined gas chromatograph / mass spectrometer (GC/MS) system is used to identify chemical species, such as those produced in an amine degradation process

Auxiliary equipment

Rotavapor (Büchi R-210) used to produce amine solutions (left) and Automatic titrator (Mettler Toledo T-50; right)

Vacuum pump (Büchi V-710; left) and Balance (Mettler Toledo; right)

Flow meters (Sierra) for accurate gas flow rate control
